Ward set to retire

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward is expected to announce his retirement from the NFL.

Ward is a borderline Hall of Fame wide receiver who was best known for his crunching blocks, often many of which were considered cheap shots.

The wideout helped the Steelers win two Super Bowls during his time in Pittsburgh and his grin after taking big hits helped make him the face of the franchise.

Ward finishes his career with over 1,000 catches, but he was eventually benched in favor of younger receivers this year. (Read More…)

Mendenhall tears ACL

The Pittsburgh Steelers received some sobering news when they found out that running back Rashard Mendenhall tore his ACL in their win over the Cleveland Browns.

Mendenhall is obviously out for the entire postseason and it remains to be seen when, or if, he will be able to return for the 2012 season.

It’s a significant blow to the Steelers despite the fact that Mendenhall was having a disappointing season overall and hadn’t been receiving as many carries as in past seasons.

The Steelers will now likely have to turn to Isaac Redman, though he doesn’t have the ability to carry the ball 25 times per game. That means he will likely share the load with Mewelde Moore. (Read More…)

Roethlisberger expects to play

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger expects to play in Sunday’s season finale against the rival Cleveland Browns.

The Steelers are hopeful that the Baltimore Ravens fall to the Cincinnati Bengals, meaning a Pittsburgh win would give them the AFC North title and a first-round bye.

However, the team also wants to remain smart with their star quarterback, who was really hobbled by his ankle injury two weeks ago against San Francisco.

The Steelers hope to keep Roethlisberger on the field for just 25-30 snaps, indicating that they are looking for a blowout victory in Cleveland. (Read More…)

Harrison suspended one game

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison has been suspended one game by the NFL for his hit on Cleveland Browns quarterback Colt McCoy.

The helmet-to-helmet hit injured McCoy’s hand and left him sprawled out in the middle of the field, and it was later determined it also caused a concussion.

Harrison was flagged for a 15-yard, unnecessary roughness penalty on the play, and this is hardly the first such incident involving the linebacker.

He also didn’t help his cause when he stated after the game that it shouldn’t have even been called a penalty and a fine or suspension was not warranted.

The linebacker did appeal the suspension, but it was upheld. He will miss Monday night’s pivotal game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Steelers edge Colts, 23-20

The Pittsburgh Steelers got a little bit lucky and escaped with a 23-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw for over 350 yards, including a long touchdown bomb to Mike Wallace.

The Steelers defense was inconsistent at times and surprisingly struggled against the Colts running game.

Troy Polomalu returned a fumble for a touchdown and the defense was able to knock Kerry Collins out of the game with a concussion, and that ultimately proved to be the difference. (Read More…)

Steelers sign Timmons to long-term deal

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed linebacker Lawrence Timmons to a six-year contract worth $50 million.

The Steelers have been busy trying to keep their own players this offseason after coming into it significantly over the league’s salary cap.

Timmons is the latest defensive player to get a big deal from the Steelers after LaMarr Woodley signed a big contact earlier in the offseason.

The two players are just 26 and 25-years old respectively and considered the backbone of the defense for years to come. (Read More…)

Harrison apologizes for ripping Goodell, teammates

Pittsburgh Steelers James Harrison said he is sorry for comments he made ripping everyone from Roger Goodell to Ben Roethlisberger.

Harrison, who has probably secured the title of NFL’s dumbest player, went off on a tirade about several NFL players, as well as the commissioner.

The linebacker reserved his harshest words for Goodell, saying he wouldn’t so much as piss on him if he was on fire.

He ripped Roethlisberger for his play in the Super Bowl, saying that he thinks he is Peyton Manning when he’s not. (Read More…)

Roethlisberger may need foot surgery

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said he may still need to undergo surgery on his foot.

Roethlisberger broke the foot but continued to play on it for the remainder of the 2010 season.

He opted to rest the foot in the offseason, and while it is almost completely healed, he is not out of the woods yet.

If it doesn’t heal completely or if he reinjures it, it’s likely that he would have to undergo surgery and miss significant time. (Read More…)

Woodley rips Flacco

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley didn’t mince words when talking about Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, saying he won’t ever win a Super Bowl.

Woodley said that Flacco simply doesn’t have what it takes to get it done and said the Ravens would never win the Super Bowl because they always have to go through Pittsburgh.

Wide receiver Hines Ward disagreed with Woodley, saying he thought Flacco was a quality player who could win a Super Bowl during his time in the league.

Flacco was clearly not happy about the comments by Woodley, saying it was obvious that he had no idea what he is talking about.

Both teams are already firing up the NFL’s hottest rivarly, and we don’t even know if there will even be a football season yet!

Lebeau back with Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator Dick Lebeau has decided to return for the 2011 season.

Lebeau was rumored to be considering retirement or maybe even jumping to the Arizona Cardinals.

Instead, he will return to coach a Pittsburgh defense that he has made one of the best in the NFL.

The defensive coordinator signed a one-year contract, something he prefers to do on a regular basis because he never knows when he might step away from the game. (Read More…)
