Steelers give Tomlin extension

The Pittsburgh Steelers have rewarded head coach Mike Tomlin with a three-year contract extension.

Tomlin has done well in his short time with the Steelers, already guiding the team to a Super Bowl.

The 38-year old coach is 31-17 with Pittsburgh in his three seasons with the Steelers. (Read More…)

Polamalu wants to bring back old-school style

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu is hoping the team gets back to its old-school style of football this season.

After opening things up the past couple of seasons with Ben Roethlisberger, the safety wants a grind-it-out mentality to return.

That means getting back to running the football and playing hard-nosed defense, something Pittsburgh struggled with last year. (Read More…)

Pittsburgh Steelers schedule released

The Pittsburgh Steelers 2010 schedule has been released, and the focus is obviously on how many games quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will miss and who those opponents happen to be.

Roethlisberger is expected to miss the first quarter of the season, but could have his suspension reduced for good behavior. The Steelers could really use him for their fourth game of the season when they host Baltimore.

The will play back-to-back primetime games at New Orleans and Cincinnati in the middle of the season, and contests at Miami and home against New England surround them.

Three straight road games against Miami, New Orleans and Cincinnati will certainly have a lot of the Steel City up in arms with the league office.

The Steelers finish the year with two cupcakes, although the season finale at Cleveland could be a scary game. The Browns knocked them off last year and it is a bitter rivalry.

Holmes traded to the New York Jets

According to ESPN.com, sources have confirmed that the Pittsburgh Steelers have traded wide receiver Santonio Holmes to the New York Jets in exchange for a fifth-round pick in this month’s draft.

While neither team has announced the deal, multiple news outlets are reporting that it has happened. If so, it brings Holmes’ tenure with the Steelers to a screeching halt. The former first-round pick reached the height of his brief career in 2009, when he was named the Super Bowl MVP after making the championship-winning touchdown catch with just seconds remaining. But he’s suffered numerous off-field legal troubles, including an arrest for marijuana possession. Holmes is currently facing a lawsuit from a woman claiming he threw a glass at her which resulted in a cut above her eye in a night club.

If he’s exonerated and avoids any discipline from the NFL, though, Holmes would add a dynamic element to the Jets passing game. But how will the Steelers replace him? Rookie Mike Wallace flashes big-play ability last season, but he is ready to step in to a starting role opposite the aging Hines Ward? That remains to be seen.

Considering the low price tag on Holmes, it’s not improbable to think that Pittsburgh expects him to be suspended for his transgresions. But if he’s able to play in 2010, it could turn out to be a highly questionable move by the team.

Steelers sign Hampton

The Pittsburgh Steelers have come to terms on a contract with defensive tackle Casey Hampton.
The Steelers were set to use their franchise tag designation on Hampton to keep him from free agency.By agreeing to a deal with Hampton, it has now allowed the Steelers to place the tag on kicker Jeff Reed.

Hampton’s contract is a three-year deal worth $21 million, with $11 million of that guaranteed.

He had 43 tackles and 2.5 sacks last year for Pittsburgh while battling injuries for much of the season.

Polamalu out vs. Chiefs

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu will miss Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs with a knee injury.

Polamalu injured his knee during the first quarter of the team’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals and did not return.

It is the same knee that Polamalu injured earlier in the year and forced him to miss four games.

The good news is that the team does not believe he reinjured it and that this is actually a new injury.

Of course, the best knews is that the Steelers only have to face the hapless Chiefs without their star safety.

Polamalu nearing return

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu is expected to practice for the first time this week and could play against the Detroit Lions.

The safety started running last week and had been entertained by the idea of returning for the team’s big game against the San Diego Chargers.

However, the Steelers held him out, wanting to make sure he is completely healthy before he steps back out on the field.

They might want to think about doing the same thing this week given their matchup against the lowly Detroit Lions.

Parker out again

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Willie Parker will not play this weekend against the Detroit Lions.

Parker missed last week’s game as well because of turf toe, which has made it difficult for him to run and cut.

He said that he really wants to play but needs to be smart about the injury and make sure it heals 100 percent before he takes the field.

Pittsburgh has to be at least slightly more confident with their running back situation after Rashard Mendenhall broke loose last week.

Parker set for season opener

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Willie Parker returned to practice and should play in Thursday night’s season opener against the Tennessee Titans.

Parker has been bothered by a hamstring injury that caused him to miss time during the preseason.

He is looking forward to rebounding from a disappointing 2008 season that was plagued by various injuries.

Parker really struggled against the Titans when the two teams met last year, but he won’t have to deal with defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth this time around.

Roethlisberger sharp in return

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger looked sharp in the third preseason game after missing the previous contest with an achilles injury.

Big Ben moved around well in the pocket and made a couple of big plays out of nothing in helping the Steelers to a 17-0 shutout win over the host Buffalo Bills.

Roethlisberger is at his best when things break down, so seeing him improvise and turn nothing into a big play looks to be all the proof the team needs that he is healthy once again.

His performance was that much more impressive when you consider that starters Willie Parker and Santonio Holmes both missed the game with injuries.
